An emergency alert has been issued to doctors across the UK regarding a new condition associated with coronavirus in children.

The warning states that in the last three weeks there has been a “noticeable increase in the number of children of all ages with multi-systemic inflammatory conditions requiring intensive care in London and other regions of the United Kingdom.”

The warning, issued by the British NHS and shared by the Association of Intensive Care Paediatricians, added: “There is great concern that the inflammatory syndrome associated with COVID-19 occurs in children in the UK, or that there may be another, still unidentified, infectious pathogen associated with these cases.”

It is not yet known how many children have had complications, but it is still considered that the number is not high, because such a complication has not been very common in children so far.

The disease has been reported in children who have been positive for the coronavirus, as well as in those who have not been infected with the virus.

Doctors have been asked to urgently refer to any patients showing signs of such symptoms.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said the country has been successful in dealing with the coronavirus so far but warned the public that it was still too early to lift the restrictions. The global pandemic has infected more than three million people worldwide, including at least 152,840 in the UK.
