Original title: A SHOCKING CONFESSION BY STOLTENBERG: CHINA WILL OVERTAKE US IN EVERYTHING!
On 11.06.2020, the web portal Mkdpress.site published an article with a sensational title A SHOCKING CONFESSION BY STOLTENBERG: CHINA WILL OVERTAKE US IN EVERYTHING!. The text quoted NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg for BBC, saying that Beijing was reportedly approaching the West in a variety of ways – in the Arctic, cyberspace and critical infrastructure, including telecommunications. At the same time, he said in a statement that “it is important for Britain to reconsider the role of Huawei in its 5G network in order to ensure its security”.The link to the original article can be found here.
The most striking is the title of the text, which despite being sensational, is full of spelling mistakes. It is obvious that such a title aims to attract as many clicks as possible and, consequently, more readers.
Namely, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg really said that China is approaching the West in different ways. However, Secretary-General Stoltenberg did not at all say that China would overtake the Alliance. On the contrary, he stressed that NATO does not see China as a new enemy or opponent. He also noted that “China’s rise fundamentally changes the global balance of power, and NATO leaders, heads of state and government, when they met in London in December, they agreed for the first time in NATO history.” that NATO must deal with the consequences, the security consequences and from China’s rise.”
We have written before about the security risks of the 5G network, where Huawei appears as an operator. One of Huawei’s leading figures is a former colonel in the Chinese military, and her ties to the Communist Party of China have been proven on several occasions. In authoritarian states like China, the so-called quasi-private sector raises alarm over security, especially given the fact that most cyber attacks on the West come through the business sector, and are orchestrated by militant attackers who often act “like patriotic hackers.”
Hence, the appeal from the NATO Secretary General to the United Kingdom is due to efficiency and effectiveness (where security and safety go hand in hand with the quality of service). With balanced standards and security protocols, and where operators are a trusted partner, the risk of security and safety disruption is reduced. Without that, the 5G is more prone to attacks, and hence the NATO alliance’s interoperability would be called into question.
