In Canada, almost half of all deaths caused by the Corona happened in the care homes for elderly people, reports Reuters. Therefore, Canadians are looking for ways to protect older people, but at the same time to protect the young people who will take care of them.
On Thursday (23.04.2020), Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told reporters during a regular briefing that urgent measures and a different approach are needed, as the measures so far are disappointing, and acknowledged that they have failed in this segment of the war with the Coronavirus.
The largest provinces in Canada, Ontario, and Quebec, have asked the government to provide military assistance as they are facing a shortage of staff in the care homes for the elderly.
But Trudeau estimates that this would only be a momentary solution that is not sustainable in the long run, and believes that soldiers should not be the ones to take care of the elderly.
The relatives of the elderly have already been banned from visiting the care homes, but the Minister of Health estimates that loneliness and sadness for their relatives can be fatal for the elderly.
